News and events Monday, 18 August 2008 Back up to The Ten
I'm pleased to have received news that the famous "Topsham Ten" is alive and well; the Lord Nelson, temporarily closed recently, is re-opening this week (Thursday 21st). The area manager for the company taking it on tells me, "Everyone is welcome, even just for a drink!"

The weather has been a bit of washout for some events - Saturday's band at the Quay on the 16th had to move into Drakes, and only a few hardy individuals turned up to play croquet in the rain on Monday - but looking at the BBC weather forecast, we're cautiously optimistic for Carnival Day. Eco-fayre launches in Topsham From a press release just received from the organisers of the forthcoming Eco-Fayre at Matthews Hall.A new concept in marketing eco-friendly products and services is to launch this September in Topsham, near Exeter Eco-fayre.co.uk is the brainchild of two Devon women, Carolyn Watson and Sue Haswell. It brings together a series of local fayres or fetes, held in local village halls, dedicated to promoting ethical, ecologically and environmentally friendly services and products to the local marketplace. “There are a couple of national exhibitions carrying eco-friendly products, but when it came to a local presence, there was very little” said Sue. “We wanted to provide an easy local route for people to find out about eco-friendly products, and buy them on their doorstep.” Carolyn, who has lived in Devon most of her life said: “In the South West, we are a very environmentally conscious community, and as we are also a holiday region, eco-fayres are the perfect way for visitors to take away more environmental knowledge home, at the same time promoting local products.” The whole aim behind eco-fayre is to bring eco products into the easy reach of the consumer. Products/services involved must be demonstrated to have a beneficial effect, or no adverse effect, on the planet and all its residents. Already a number of companies have signed up to Eco-Fayres, including Riverford Organics, Xango, Green Chef and a local wormery/composter supplier. Carolyn continues: “For businesses, eco-fayre means an easy way to promote, inform and sell. Costs to take a table are kept low, meaning it's a great route for companies to bring their products to market and raise their profile, and for the entrepreneur to be able to launch on a minimal budget.” To book a table at Eco-Fayre, Topsham on 14th September, simply call Sue or Carolyn on 01626 864458 or visit www.eco-fayre.co.uk Food Festival photos and reports See the Topsham Food Festival gallery at the South West Media Group, which coordinates photos for the local press. Kim Millon also has a photo gallery online. Marc Millon's Notes from a Devon Kitchen has reports online of the Festival and Nello's Longest Table. "Woolserybloke" has posted a YouTube video of the band playing Queen numbers outside the Globe. Topsham Pool We have a new page for Topsham Pool - see the Facilities page or www.topsham.org/pool.html, for description, terms and conditions, and opening times. Matthews Hall modernisation fund A brief reminder: proceeds from Nello's Longest Table will go to Force Cancer Charity and to Matthews Hall Modernisation Appeal. As announced at the event, donations large and small are valuable and vital for the project; it needs to raise £185,000, excluding the expenditure on providing disabled access and toilets which we plan to raise by applying to specialised charities. Download Gift aid form (printable PDF format). Matthews Hall has been the social centre of Topsham for nearly 80 years, but retains many defunct architectural features, such as a ticket kiosk, remaining from its original custom design as the Tivoli cinema (see the Devon Cinema Gazetteer). It now needs upgrading for present and future generations. Plans include: Large new open plan foyer with local information display. A new cafe/bar in the foyer. Better access and a new toilet for the disabled. Internet access in the cafe/bar. Improved insulation, lighting and acoustics in the main hall. Improvements and a new look to the Council Chamber. A lift to the Council Chamber. Chair storage under the stage. Nello's Longest Table The Nello's Longest Table community feast was a resounding success: 264 tables stretching for a third of a mile, and around 1500 people present. After initially shaky weather, Sunday ended in a mild bright evening. People had managed to find a remarkable number of gazebos at short notice when it began raining toward the start time; these turned out to be unnecessary for shelter, but definitely added to the general party atmosphere. Co-organiser Marc Millon said: "This quote from our friend Natacha sums up Nello's Longest Table perfectly." It was a perfect evening, like a cross between a Sicilian wedding and summer fete gone bonkers; England flinging its knickers in the air! Here's a video slideshow I put together of the whole length of the table. More photos shortly. |
